Dewi (David), Patron Saint of Cymru (Wales)

Dewi Sant

Dewi Sant, St. David, died on the first of March. St. David’s Day (Dydd Gwyl Dewi Sant), is the traditional day of the Welsh – celebrated all over the world by wearing either of the national emblems, a leek or a daffodil, in commemoration of this Celtic saint’s death. See the bottom of this page for how to celebrate in more detail.

Annwyl Gyfaill
I've devised and will present, on 2MBSFM 102.5 Sydney's Fine Music
Station, a programme featuring Welsh Music and Welsh Performers.
'Reflections from Wales' will be aired between 2 and 4pm on St David's
Day March 1 and is available on streaming from 2mbs.com.

The programme includes Malcolm Arnold's Four Welsh Dances, Bryn
Terfel performing some Welsh Folk Songs, Telynores Susan Drake
performing Fauré, and Owain Arwel Hughes and Richard Hickox conducting
works with a Welsh flavour. Catrin Finch plays some Bach along with
some arrangements from another Welshman, Karl Jenkins. Who knew that
Alec Templeton was Welsh and there's local flavour in a performance of
his sonata for clarinet? And we'll hope to finish off with a bit of
the Morriston Orpheus - I say no more!

I hope that you'll be able to tune in especially if you're Welsh. If
you're not then just relax, enjoy the hwyl and feel Welsh!

2010 Dylan Thomas Prize Announced: World’s Top Cash Award for Young Writers
March 1, 2010 to April 30, 2010
Literary competition
Organized By: The Dylan Thomas Prize, sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government
The competition is underway for the 2010 DYLAN THOMAS PRIZE, the world’s top literary prize for young writers. The prestigious prize, named in honor of the famous Welsh writer and poet, and sponsored by the government of Wales, brings with it international prestige as well as a cash award of £30,000 ($46,000).

The Dylan Thomas Prize honors its shortlist finalists and annual winner for published work in the broad range of literary forms in which Dylan Thomas excelled, including poetry, prose, fictional drama, short story collections, novels, novellas, stage plays and screenplays.

“We want the world to be aware of the Welsh interest in promoting new writing. Our Prize provides a focus and inspiration for a whole new generation of writers throughout the English-speaking world.” - Peter Stead, Chair of the Dylan Thomas Prize

A “rock star” of poetry known worldwide, Dylan Thomas himself was a regular visitor to the United States, drawing sold out crowds and thrilling audiences with his dramatic readings. A number of American cities including New York also claim him as their own.

The official launch of the 2010 Prize will take place this year at a ceremony and reception hosted at the British Consulate-General in Boston on March 1. Special guests and speakers will include Harvard Review Editor Christine Thompson, and former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky.

The recently opened high-tech, “green” consulate has been selected as the home of the launch in order to reinforce the leading-edge vision of the Dylan Thomas Prize itself.

Entries for the competition must be submitted before April 30, by the publisher, editor, literary agent, or in the case of film scripts and stage plays, by the producer. Writers must be 18-30 years old, and the literary works must have been published within the past year to be eligible for competition.

For more information about the Dylan Thomas Prize, and for complete entry rules and guidelines, please visit www.THEDYLANTHOMASPRIZE.com

Our celebrations for St. David’s Day
Saturday 27th February
We will have a morning service at Boulcott Street Baptist Church, Wellington at 11am
There will be some well-loved Welsh hymns sung.
Everyone is welcome to the Church Service.

Each year, we send greetings for St. David’s Day to Welsh Societies around the world, and in turn receive greetings from kindred societies. These are read out. Also, a roll-call of the counties of Wales is made; as each county is called, those from that area stand and cheer. Several people perform musical items, and there may be a short story read.
The winners of the Ellen Griffith cup for Poetry, and the Raphael Jones Memorial Cup for Short Story, will be announced.

“On St David's Day, March 1, 1979 the people of Wales voted four to one against the establishment of a National Assembly. On September 18, 1997 the people of Wales voted narrowly in favour of the establishment of a National Assembly which gave Wales its first "Parliament" for six hundred years. The forthcoming year will probably see a referendum which, if won, will give the Assembly primary law making powers and could well see Wales on the road to even greater autonomy if not outright independence. This talk will consider the factors which led to this massive change in public opinion not only in Wales but in Scotland and the increasingly real possibility of a break up of the United Kingdom.”

Dr. Robert Tyler, visiting Fullbright Scholar from Wales, will speak on Wales' and Scotland's potential political future, 4:30 PM, Sunday March 7, at University of the Pacific, 3601 Pacific Avenue, in Stockton. Doors will open at 4:00 PM.

Dr. Tyler’s talk will begin “A Welsh Evening”, WASCC's (Welsh Amercian Society of Central CA) annual St. David’s Day/Welsh Evening event.

Dinner, catered by Bon Appetite and entertainment will follow Dr. Tyler’s talk at another UOP campus location. There is no admission charge to hear Dr. Tyler’s speak; there is a charge for the dinner and entertainment. Dr. Tyler will also attend the dinner and entertainment.

The event is sponsored by University of the Pacific, School of International Studies. Advance, paid reservations are required only for the dinner and entertainment. 10 Ways to 'Thank the Lord You're Welsh' this St. David's Day!

- A Message From The Chicago Tafia

1) Contact your local radio stations by late February and ask them to play Welsh music and relay "Happy St. David's Day" messages to the Welsh in your area on March 1st. There is plenty of music by Welsh artists that are readily available on most radio stations play lists. If it is a rock/pop station ask for Duffy, The Stereophonics, The Manic Street Preachers, Jem, Catatonia, or Tom Jones, if it is a classical station, you might try asking for Bryn Terfel, Charlotte Church, Paul Potts, Katherine Jenkins or Karl Jenkins.

2) Email a 'Happy Saint David's Day/ Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus' message to your friends and family.

3) Wear a daffodil, a leek, or something red on March 1st.

4) Attend a St. David's day event sponsored by your local Welsh society; there are hundreds across North America to choose from.

5) If there are no Welsh groups nearby, hold a St. David's day dinner at your home or request your local pub to stock:

Welsh beer (e.g. Tomos Watkins of Felinfoel)Welsh whiskey (e.g. Penderyn)
Welsh-American Whiskey (e.g. Evan Williams)
Welsh-American wine or cider (e.g. Cambria wines from California, AmByth wines from
California, Gales cider from the Thomas Family winery in Madison,
Indiana)
or ask them to have a special on Red Dragon Cocktails (ingredients below)
1 measure Gin1 measure Vodka1 measure Triple Sec or Cointreau
2 measures Cranberry juice1 measure Orange juice2 dashes Grenadine
Squeeze of fresh lime

6) Sign up to AmeriCymru - the Welsh-American social network http://americymru.ning.com

7) Hang a Welsh flag outside your house or put a Welsh flag bumper sticker on your car.

8) Change your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. profile picture to the Welsh flag for the day.

9) Buy a subscription to North American's Welsh newspaper Ninnau www.ninnau.com

10) Forward this message on to as many people as possible!
